Already trailing the series 2-1, the Cleveland Cavaliers could be without the services of star guard Donovan Mitchell, who was added to the team’s injury report with a “questionable” designation for Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinals series against the Boston Celtics, per Tim Bontemps of ESPN.
Mitchell is suffering from what the team is calling a left calf strain.
The 27-year-old guard scored 33 points in a 106-93 loss in Game 3. Center Jarrett Allen is already out with a rib injury; if Mitchell can’t go in Game 4, the chances of the Cavs pulling out a win, even at home, drop close to zero.
Donovan Mitchell questionable to play against Boston Celtics
Mitchell has been the best player in this series, Boston stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown included. He’s averaging 31.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists on 52/53/79 shooting splits against the Celtics and 29.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.7 assists in the playoffs.
Mitchell was 7-of-12 from three in Cleveland’s Game 3 loss. The rest of the Cavaliers shot 5-of-24. He was 12-of-22 from the field, while his teammates were 24-of-62 (39 percent). Evan Mobley was the only other Cavs player to hit double digits in points before the fourth quarter.
The five-time All-Star’s surrounding cast has been a topic of conversation all postseason. According to some reports, Mitchell could force his way out of Cleveland after the season barring the team making a championship run. That seemed unlikely before his injury.
Without Mitchell – or even with a limited version – Cleveland could be heading back to Boston for Game 5 facing elimination.
