The Los Angeles Lakers could be in the market for a new head coach this offseason. The organization is reportedly unlikely to bring back Darvin Ham for a third season. JJ Redick will reportedly be among the candidates who are considered for the job, if the position is vacant. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin revealed as much during a recent appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, stating:
JJ certainly is a real candidate, if they do open up this coaching search, but there’s, I’d say, half a dozen folks out there, including possibly the guy who just lost last night against the Mavericks in Tyronn Lue. He has one-year remaining on his contract. What’s going to happen with his deal with the Clippers? There will be a process there that there are several viable candidates that will get an interview.
McMenamin noted that LeBron James’ opinion will be weighed, however, it is not guaranteed the team will hire his preferred candidate. The four-time NBA champion hosts the Mind the Game podcast with Redick, who does not have any previous coaching experience. Meanwhile, he was coached by Ty Lue with the Cleveland Cavaliers for three seasons, winning the 2016 NBA Finals together. James endorsed him to be named head coach of the Lakers prior to the organization hiring Frank Vogel.
Rashad McCants believes JJ Redick could be the Los Angeles Lakers next coach
Former NBA player Rashad McCants frequently appears on the Gil’s Arena podcast as a co-host. He recently suggested that JJ Redick could be in line to become the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, stating:
JJ and LeBron start a podcast. JJ says he wants to be a coach. LeBron knows Darvin’s a** and his days are numbered. JJ gets hired by the Lakers. LeBron is still a player. JJ gets to coach LeBron. They bring in Bronny. The podcast thrives. How does that not make sense?… He’s coaching JJ to be the coach.
McCants alluded to James and Redick frequently talking X’s and O’s on their podcast, Mind the Game. He noted that the four-time NBA MVP trusts the 2006 National College Player of the Year.
