Anthony Edwards is having an elite postseason run through six games, all of which his Minnesota Timberwolves have won. The two-time All-Star is averaging 32.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 1.8 steals and 0.8 blocks per game. He has shot 54.7% from the field, 41.9% from three-point range and 81.8% from the free-throw line.
His superb two-way play has led many to compare him to Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Michael Jordan. Kenyon Martin recently revealed he is not a fan of the comparisons, claiming they are too soon. Speaking to Justin Termine and Eddie A. Johnson of SiriusXM NBA Radio, the former All-Star stated:
First and foremost, I hate comparisons. Everybody is different. Michael Jordan was Michael Jordan. Nobody is ever going to be Michael Jordan so let’s stop this. Anthony Edwards is a great young talent in this league and he’s making a name for himself in this NBA and he has a bright, bright future.
The competitive nature, you could probably go with that, but it’s too early. The kid’s 22 years old. Let’s take him out of the microwave society and let’s let him enjoy this success and everybody enjoy it with him. Let’s enjoy this ride. People are too quick to crown people and put titles in comparison to people. Let’s just appreciate the work that he’s doing.
Edwards is just scratching the surface of his potential at 22 years old. While he could become the face of the league in the future, the comparisons are likely too early. The fourth-year guard is in the midst of his first postseason series past the first round. Additionally, he will likely earn All-NBA honors for the first time when the teams are announced. As great as he has been to watch, he has a long way to go before being compared to Jordan.
Anthony Edwards not a fan of Michael Jordan comparisons
While many have compared Anthony Edwards to Michael Jordan in recent weeks, the Minnesota Timberwolves guard is not a fan of such comparisons. Speaking to Melissa Rohlin of FOX Sports, he stated:
I want it to stop. He’s the greatest of all time. I can’t be compared to him. [h/t FOX Sports]
Edwards’ humble nature will only further endear him to fans. The fourth-year guard has improved every season of his young career. While the comparisons to Michael Jordan are very premature, the two-time All-Star is slowly carving out his own path in the league. He has the Timberwolves just two wins away from reaching the Western Conference Finals.
