The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly interested in bringing back veteran guard Spencer Dinwiddie. Relaying NBA rumors, insider Michael Scotto wrote:

Now, the Lakers and Mavericks are once again expected to have interest in Dinwiddie again as he enters free agency, league sources told HoopsHype.

Dinwiddie joined the Lakers late last season after being released by the Toronto Raptors and appeared in 28 games for the team.

In those 28 games, he averaged 6.8 points, 1.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game on 39.7 percent shooting from the field and 38.9 percent shooting from beyond the arc. He then didn’t contribute all that much as the Lakers got eliminated in five games by the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs.

Envisioning Dinwiddie’s role on Lakers

Should Dinwiddie re-sign with the Lakers, it will be interesting to see what type of role he gets. Gabe Vincent should be healthy after having some injury troubles last season. Bronny James was just drafted by the team, while Max Christie is back in town on a four-year deal.

Austin Reaves is still on the squad, and D’Angelo Russell recently picked up his player option for this season. So, minutes might be tough to come by for Dinwiddie, who might prefer playing for a team where he’d have less competition for minutes.

There might be some more playing time to go around if Vincent and Russell, two players the team seemingly is fine parting ways with, end up leaving the team.

However, it’s important to note that the Lakers were Dinwiddie’s favorite team growing up. That might end up being something that keeps the California native with the Purple and Gold.

Los Angeles is entering a new era with JJ Redick as its head coach. Redick was hired to replace Darvin Ham, who was fired after just two seasons with the Lakers.

Perhaps Dinwiddie will be able to play a bigger role under Redick — should the 31-year-old decide to stay with the Lakers.
