Duncan Robinson has spent his entire six-year career with the Miami Heat after joining the franchise as an undrafted free agent in 2018. His tenure with the only franchise that he has known nearly came to an end this offseason. Barry Jackson reported that the Heat considered dumping his contract to clear up cap space this offseason. The Miami Herald sports writer initially tweeted:
The reason the Heat never made a formal offer to Highsmith until past 18 hours is because they were pursuing other things. DeRozan among them; not sure what else. Those things simply didn’t materialize.
When asked how Miami would afford to pay DeMar DeRozan, Jackson responded:
Dumping Duncan contract into team with cap space was one option explored
Robinson is set to earn $19.4 million in the fourth year of a five-year, $90 million contract extension signed in 2021. He averaged 12.9 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.2 blocks per game in 2023-24 while shooting 45.0% from the field, 39.5% from three-point range and 88.9% from the free-throw line. He received Most Improved Player votes for the second time in his six seasons.

While the Miami Heat considered moving on from Duncan Robinson, they ultimately opted against such a move. Responding to fan page Vice City Alerts, who claimed that he will be moved at the deadline, Barry Jackson claimed the organization did not want to give him away for nothing. The Miami Herald reported tweeted:
Heat would have wanted asset back. They didn’t want to give him away. Has too much value and they’re willing to pay tax. Would have been vehicle to free up ability to make sign and trade.
Robinson’s outside shooting ability would likely be coveted by teams throughout the league if he is made available. It is unclear what he could bring back in a potential trade. Robinson will earn $39.3 million over the next two seasons.
