The San Antonio Spurs have not had a great season despite getting Victor Wembanyama with the first overall pick in last year’s NBA Draft. The Spurs did earn a big win on Friday, however, as they took down the New York Knicks in overtime. San Antonio had a big lead for much of the game, but the Knicks were able to come back and force OT. Wembanyama led the Spurs with 40 points and they got the win, and he celebrated by throwing the basketball into the home stands.
Victor Wembanyama’s celebration didn’t look all that bad, but the NBA thought differently. Throwing the ball into the stands like that is not allowed, and it is going to cost Wembanyama $25k. The league released a statement regarding the incident and the punishment.
“NEW YORK – San Antonio Spurs forward-center Victor Wembanyama has been fined $25,000 for throwing the game ball into the spectator stands, it was announced today by Joe Dumars, Executive Vice President, Head of Basketball Operations. The incident occurred following the conclusion of the Spurs’ 130-126 overtime victory over the New York Knicks on March 29 at Frost Bank Center.”
That is unfortunate for Wembanyama as he got caught up in his emotions celebrating the big win over the Knicks. It has been a frustrating season for the Spurs, and that win was one of the lone bright spots.
Wembanyama has had a fantastic rookie season, and it is going to come to an end in a couple of weeks. He is going to be a very exciting player to watch next season.
