The Atlanta Hawks had just a 3.0% chance to land the top overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Despite having the tenth-best odds in Sunday’s draft lottery, the ping-pong balls bounced in their favor. Atlanta will select first overall for the first time since the 1975 NBA Draft. They will hope for a better result this time around after they drafted Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer David Thompson, who opted to play in the ABA. The Hawks will also have to decide what to do with Trae Young.
The three-time All-Star has been the face of the franchise, however, there had been talks that he could be made available this summer. While many believed that landing the top overall pick could lead Atlanta to look for a co-star for Young, that may not be the case. Evan Sidery of Forbes Sports shared an update from Adrian Wojnarowski, claiming that the franchise is leaning towards a rebuild.
Young has been linked to the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, and San Antonio Spurs, among others. There are legitimate questions about his size and defensive shortcomings. Despite this, his offensive game will make him very attractive on the trade market, if he is made available. He averaged 25.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 10.8 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.2 blocks per game in 2023-24. The sixth-year guard shot 43.0% from the field, 37.3% from three-point range and 85.5% from the free-throw line.
What could the Atlanta Hawks land in a potential Trae Young trade?
If the Atlanta Hawks move Trae Young, they will likely look to receive a package centered around draft capital. The San Antonio Spurs were able to land the fourth and eighth overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Evan Sidery of Forbes reported that San Antonio could send Atlanta multiple draft picks to pair the three-time All-Star with Victor Wembanyama.
It is no secret that the Spurs are looking for a point guard to pair with the 2024 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year. While previous reports suggested that the Hawks’ asking price may be too high, San Antonio could look to move two top-ten picks in a weak class to secure their point guard of the future. If there is a bidding war for Young this offseason, the Spurs are in a prime position to come out on top.
